Basic Mechanical Ventilation Course

This is a peer reviewed short course for post graduates /pediatricians. Those who have done PALS and also have some exposure to PICU will benefit more. This course gives understanding of the fundamentals of ‘conventional mechanical ventilation’ (with normal /abnormal lungs) through interactive lectures, discussions & workstations. This course kindles interest in critical care to enrich oneself further in this speciality.

On day one, the course begins with applied physiology and modes of ventilation and goes on to explaining monitoring parameters such as blood gases, capnography, pulse-oximetry, radiology etc. All this is reinforced by hands on- group discussions during workstations that explains (1) intubation techniques in challenging situations (shock, raised ICP, difficult airway etc.), (2) initiation of ventilation (hands on), (3) trouble shooting, (4) non-invasive ventilation.

Day two deals with disease specific ventilation such as fundamentals of managing ARDS, refractory hypoxemia, septic & cardiogenic shock (with basics of heart-lung interaction), raised intracranial pressure and finally how to wean off. This is followed by work stations which gives hands of experience in managing ARDS, refractory hypoxemia along with identifying graphics.

This ‘two day’ workshop ends with a post- test (20 -25 MCQ), distribution of attendance certificate, and top three prizes that gives actual self -feedback to the delegates and also to the teachers!

Each candidate gets a working manual to refer to.
